'Buisjesdag' (the day before the Dutch herring fleet puts out to sea) in the harbour of Scheveningen. Herring fishermen say goodbye to their wives and children and sail their luggers out of the harbour, send off by countless spectators. The hospital-churchship De Hoop (The Hope) follows the ships, with on board minister Anne Vondeling. Near Schotland the ships fish for herring, which is then put into barrels and transferred to faster ships. The lugger Scheveningen 201 Sigurda is the first to arrive with 'Hollandse nieuwe' (Dutch early season herrings, eaten raw) in the home port, welcomed by several spectators.
