Industrial film about the production of coal in a “modern” mine in the United States. This film was probably shot at the Black Servant Coal mine in Elkville, Illinois, where the first electric “coal shovel” was introduced in 1921. The film shows the process of mining, processing, and transporting coal, with the focus on the modernization of the industry. Workers descend into a mine; we see various images of the work below ground, with different types of machines that have taken over the craft. Electric locomotives pull the coal trains, and inspections take place to prevent a collapse. Groundwater is pumped out, and the lifts are operated by electric motors. There are images of power plants producing energy. The carts are driven automatically, and the various sizes of coal are separated on a conveyor belt. By radar ship and by train. The film ends with images of throngs of workers at a factory site, where the coal is being transported.
